On April 20, the UK Parliament passed a bill aimed at putting cigarettes out of reach for future generations. Both the Commons and the Lords approved the final version of the “landmark” legislation. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will prohibit anyone born after December 31, 2008, from ever legally purchasing cigarettes.Smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death, disability, and illness in the UK, and the bill is part of a broader effort to reduce its health impact.
The legislation now requires the formal approval of King Charles III, a largely ceremonial step before it becomes law. It will also grant the government greater powers to regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products, including their flavors and packaging.
