During a public speech on April 16, Pope Leo gave a sobering warning about the condition of world leadership. The pope avoided mentioning specific people in favor of using moral and spiritual language to convey his message. "The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants," the Pope declared.
The Pope went on to denounce "woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political gain" while speaking in Cameroon.
In a lengthy and highly scathing post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump directly addressed the pontiff's positions on crime, nuclear policy, and global conflicts. Trump lashes out at Pope Leo, calling him "weak on crime" and "weak on nuclear weapons".
Trump’s statement sparked a major increase in tensions between the White House and the Vatican. However, observers said the remarks aligned with Pope's broader calls for moral leadership and moderation in the face of growing global tensions.
