The European Union has banned the use of trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) in cosmetics beginning September 1, after regulators classified the substance as a reproductive toxicant. TPO, commonly found in gel nail polishes, functions as a photoinitiator that helps the polish harden under ultraviolet light. Many consumers favor gel products because they tend to last longer, are more durable, and dry quickly compared with traditional nail polish.

Officials clarified that the measure applies only to the single ingredient and does not prohibit gel nail polishes overall. Manufacturers are expected to continue offering gel products formulated with safer alternatives, ensuring the category remains available across the EU. Industry representatives noted that the restriction should not cause alarm among consumers or salon professionals.

Cosmetic regulations differ worldwide, but experts suggest the ban could extend beyond Europe. Industry observers have predicted that similar restrictions on TPO may be introduced in the United Kingdom and United States by late 2026.
