Officials have confirmed that 72 people have died following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the central Philippines. In northern Cebu, communities remain on edge due to aftershocks, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate and leaving 294 injured.
The shallow quake hit around 10 p.m. local time on October 1 near the city of Bogo, west of Palompon, in Cebu province. At least 70 lives were lost, and the powerful tremors caused severe damage to infrastructure and buildings across nearby cities and villages.
Emergency response efforts are being hampered by collapsed bridges, buckled and cracked roads, and downed power lines. Search and rescue operations are the top priority, while national police and fire officials work urgently to restore electricity and deliver relief supplies to affected communities.
