The Texas Department of State Health Services has announced that the recent measles outbreak in the state is officially over as of August 18. The outbreak, which began in a West Texas county in January, peaked at 762 reported cases before subsiding in July.

Children accounted for more than two-thirds of the infections, and tragically, two school-aged children in Texas lost their lives due to the disease.

Although the outbreak has been declared over, health officials emphasize that the threat of measles still exists. They urge health care providers to remain vigilant and to test for measles in patients who present symptoms consistent with the infection.
