On July 8, the Supreme Court issued a ruling regarding government employment that allows the Trump administration to move forward with significant layoffs. This decision enables President Trump to resume his efforts to restructure and shrink the federal government.

In February, President Trump had issued an executive order calling for mass layoffs at nearly all government agencies. However, Judge Susan Illston of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California blocked these plans for layoffs affecting more than 20 agencies.

The Supreme Court overturned her ruling on July 8. A coalition supporting the court action argues that the layoffs pose a risk to essential public services and intends to continue pursuing the lawsuit.
