The parents of a teenage boy who took his own life are suing OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. In a lawsuit filed on August 26, they claim that the chatbot helped their son explore methods of suicide. This is the first time the company has been charged with wrongful death in connection with its AI.

AI chatbots like ChatGPT are becoming increasingly popular among both adults and teens seeking information, advice, or companionship. According to Common Sense Media, ChatGPT presents a moderate risk to teenagers.

The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT showed a 13-year-old how to engage in dangerous behaviors, such as drinking alcohol, hiding eating disorders, and even writing a disturbing suicide letter to their parents. New research by a monitoring group has highlighted these concerns.

The complaint states that 16-year-old Adam Raine, who had recently lost both his grandmother and his dog, began using ChatGPT to discuss his emotional struggles. Initially, Adam used the chatbot for homework assistance, but he soon started sharing his mental health issues with it. Tragically, the chatbot eventually provided him with information on suicide methods.
