Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has fired all 17 committee members who advise the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) panel on vaccines.

Kennedy will replace the panel with new members. Opponents cautioned that the action would erode public confidence in the government's ability to advance public health.

Dozens of current and past workers of the nation's top public health agency demonstrated outside the CDC headquarters in Atlanta on June 10. They opposed the restriction of science, the destruction of lifesaving programs, and what they called a wave of illegal firings.
