On January 7, some unidentified individuals used red stain to vandalize and destroy the historic tourist attraction Scala Dei Turchi in southern Sicily. The magnificent Scala dei Turchi, also known as the Turkish staircase or Stair of the Turks, is a favorite of locals and a popular tourist destination in the Agrigento area.
The Scala dei Turchi on the coast of Realmonte in southern Sicily has been vandalized, prompting an investigation by Italian authorities. Agrigento cultural heritage superintendence officials also conducted a site check on January 8. According to the superintendent's technicians, the vandals used red iron oxide powder, and the cliff damage appeared to be temporary.
The Scala Dei Turchi is a massive staircase that stretches into the Mediterranean off the coast of Realmonte in southern Sicily. Scala Dei Turchi was also a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019. Volunteers in Realmonte began the process of removing the red powder and restoring the site's beauty on January 8.
