According to Director Kelley LeBonty of the Detroit Animal Welfare Group in Romeo, Michigan, the son of an animal hoarder drove up on December 23 with 497 parakeets in his truck from his father's residence. On December 26, 339 more parakeets were delivered to the group, bringing the total to 836.

It was described as an unexpected Christmas present by the Detroit Animal Welfare Group. People at the Michigan Animal Shelter were shocked, but they couldn't throw these parakeets out because they were all crammed into cages, choking one another, and in desperate need of assistance. According to their owner's son, his father intended to spawn only a few, but things got out of hand. On the other hand, his father had spent $1,200 (£890) per month on them.

Officials at the shelter are said to have sought help from bird rescue organizations. A temporary home was set up for the parakeets, and food was donated. A parakeet necessitates a 6- to 15-year commitment. After being examined by a veterinarian, the parakeets, which are a type of parrot, will be available for adoption.
