The European Union has introduced a new system for visitors entering the Schengen Area, effective October 12. The Schengen Area covers 29 European countries that permit unrestricted cross-border travel, including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will be rolled out in stages over the next six months. Under this system, the traditional passport stamping process will be replaced by a fully digital procedure. An electronic record will now track travelers’ entries and exits instead of ink stamps.
First-time visitors must register at a designated kiosk equipped with biometric scanners that capture photos, fingerprints, and passport details. The kiosk will also ask four short questions about the traveler’s trip, such as their accommodation plans and return ticket status.
The registration process is free and requires no prior preparation. By January 2026, at least half of all border checkpoints are expected to be operating with EES, and by April 10, 2026, the system should be fully implemented for all eligible travelers.
